NILPLA®, 100% recyclable corn fabric

NILPLA® is a circular polylactide (PLA). It is a bio-based material made from corn. Its production alone requires far less water and energy compared to other textile materials. At NIL Textile, we have further reduced its environmental impact through recycling, and we are the first company in the world that managed to process this material into the fabric. NILPLA® received a prestigeous ISPO Textrends Award for the Best Product in the global competition.

NILPLA®, material with the lowest environmental footprint

PLA enters our production only at the beginning, then we keep it in a loop thanks to a recycling process developed together with Technical University in Brno. That is why we call our material circular PLA – NILPLA®. Circularity shifts sustainability to a next level. Thanks to it, NILPLA® achieves 86% less carbon footprint in the production and waste phases compared to polyester and 68% less carbon footprint compared to cotton. Water consumption is 98% lower than cotton.

Perfectly recyclable without loss of quality

Together with scientists from Czech universities, we developed two recycling routes for NILPLA® material – molecular and thermomechanical recycling. The recycling process consumes no water and saves 77% energy compared to raw material production.

Where does NILPLA® come from?

Corn as a raw material source comes from European and US farmers. We only use it at the beginning and then keep it in a loop. From corn based PLA, we make yarns in Germany. The production of the NILPLA® fabric itself and the sewing of the final products then takes place in the Czech Republic in our own production facilities. Recycling takes place in the Netherlands or in Italy.

Our white label products

We focus primarily on the production of sportswear from NILPLA® material. The material is especially great for sports t-shirts thanks to its quick drying and excellent thermoregulatory properties. The NILPLA® material dries 3x faster than cotton, and its 2x better thermoregulating properties compared to merino wool ensure that it keeps you pleasantly cool in summer and warm in winter. In addition, the material is also antibacterial and anti-wrinkle.
